How to Decorate Like a ParisianColby Morrell
We can all agree that the Parisians have impeccable taste when it comes to interior design. But what gives Parisian interiors that certain je ne sais quoi? We’ve put together a simple guide to creating a gorgeous space just like a Parisian would do.
Highlight Architectural Details
The most fabulous of Parisian apartments have one thing in common – beautiful architectural details. We admit that most of us don’t live in a space with original moldings and restored hardwood floors, but every home has some architectural interest and showcasing that will set your home apart from others. For instance, if you have high ceilings, hang a chandelier that draws your attention up! Maybe you live in a home where the bathroom is covered in pastel tiles from the 50’s – instead of demolishing them, highlight them with modern fixtures and white painted walls. Parisians are all about using their home’s features to guide the design.
A touch of gold is a classic way of adding glamour and sophistication to a space and the Parisians do it best. A gilded mirror hanging as the center point of a room or pair of lamps finished in antique gold will instantly add class to any space. Sprinkle gold accents throughout the house, but don’t get carried away or you could end up looking like Versailles – and while we love Versailles, it works best, well, in Versailles.
Crystal is timeless and few know this better than the Parisians do. Crystal chandeliers and French homes go hand in hand with each other. Incorporate one above your dining table or add some glamour to a powder bath. You can also add a small touch of crystal to a room with a vase.
Decorate With Antiques
Antiques are probably the biggest must-have items for a Parisian home. Well, any home needs antique touches if you ask us! The French love to show their European antiques with pride, often juxtaposed next to a very modern element. Doing so creates a distinctly Parisian look while highlighting the antique piece.
Stick to a Simple Palette
We love bright and colorful interiors, but Parisian chic homes stick to a more subdued color scheme. If you’re trying to create a sophisticated European look, consider a monochromatic scheme throughout your home. Touches of gray and metallics go a long way here. You can add color using art.
Fresh Flowers are a Must
We’ve said it a million times, but we don’t mind saying it again: fresh flowers transform a room from great to FABULOUS. The Parisians know this, but they don’t overdo it. Simple arrangements scattered throughout a space are preferred in this case. You want your bouquets to look as if you cut them from your own garden this morning, and who knows, maybe you did!
You know what they say…Paris is always a good idea!
