Misty Ware

In 1996, I received a BFA in Graphic design from APSU in Clarksville, Tennessee. While my background is in advertising, I enjoy painting for emotional expression and personal development. My connection to graphic design, typography, paper, and print material—inevitably finds it's way into my work.

Most of the paper and/or typography added to the imagery is recycled from vintage books, ads, and magazines. I am fascinated with reading the old magazines—stepping back in time to an era that I never experienced firsthand. Often I'm amazed at how much things have changed and at the same time, how they haven't. People always ask me why I add it to some of my work...To me, doing so, often gives the piece a unique textural quality, gives the type new purpose, and symbolizes the importance of our past in our present lives. Each piece is a process of layers even if it is only the paint that is layered one wash over another.

This body of work represents life and how we are the result of a series of cumulative experiences. From childhood to adulthood we are everchanging. As we continue to learn, we evolve, transition, and flourish. It is my hope that the same is true for my work—that the finished piece expresses the personal process of building one layer over another.
