Non-Western art often uses imagery and symbols that are known and accessible to everyone in that culture—from the elite to the commoner. In some ways, much contemporary art relies so heavily on art history that it becomes inaccessible to many people.
In my art, I have used objects and materials whose function and purpose is well known to create autobiographical works. It is my hope that people will be able to transfer the functions and connotations of the various materials to the pieces as a whole. I am also seeking to produce an oeuvre that is not exclusively autobiographical, but illuminates the intricacies and dilemmas of others. Our gifts, whether artistic or not, are best realized when invested in the life of another.
