99x Gilded Coast Glamour at the Springfield Art MuseumColby Morrell
We are excited to be part of the Museum’s signature fundraising event blending spirits, music, fashion, food, and frivolity to benefit our Conservation & Preservation Fund. The name is funny, but the concept is simple. Hosted on an annual basis, this event helps preserve the collection for the next 100 years, so that it can continue to delight and educate audiences for generations to come.
During this event, guests will explore living tableaus set up my local taste makers and creatives, that’s where we come in. Obelisk Home is excited to participate in this year’s theme of Gilded Coast Glamour, a tribute to the breathtaking and historic mansions of Newport, Rhode Island. The idea for this theme comes from John Fredrick Kensett, one of the founders of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, and his work Shore Landscape, Newport.
This painting has been in the Springfield Art Museum’s collection since 1949 and is needing restored. The funds raised at the event will be used for the restoration.
The Gilded Age rose from the ashes of the Civil War and lasted until the first sirens were heard at the start of World War 1. Not a time period for the subtle minded, or particularly the civic minded, this showy design style reflected startling economic growth that all too often over shadowed a greater need for social reform.
As visually arresting and magnificent as the Golden Age was, and we do like shiny things, we couldn’t help see a parallel with the excessive design drama and social divisiveness we see today.
At Obelisk Home, we believe people can “live well” and “do good” for others. Having been inspired by the lasting and still relevant message of Mark Twain’s classic novel, The Gilded Age, we are reminded of two things…
“All that glitters is not always gold” and “Share the bling wherever you go.”
Obelisk Home is a living laboratory for “all things design.” As an incubator for the designer’s genius, a showcase for style, trend and what’s new and next, Obelisk Home has become a favored community gathering spot for both retail shopping and design projects.
