3D printing is quickly changing the way things are manufactured. Also called additive manufacturing, 3D printing is essentially a way to create three-dimensional objects from digital models. This technology has grown more popular in the past couple of years but has been around for nearly three decades. Because of advancement in technology, 3D printers have become more efficient and accessible. Since its inception, the 3D printing industry as a whole has grown over 45 percent each year. In 2013 the market was valued at $2.5 billion, and the projected value is estimated to reach $16 billion by the year 2018.
Nearly anything can be created with 3D printing as the application of this technique is limitless. Currently, it’s being used to customize mass produced household items – even jewelry. It’s only natural that this technique is being applied to furniture. We caught a glimpse of some 3D printed furniture at High Point Market this past fall, and it was pretty impressive. Our favorite thing about printed furniture is that the customization options are endless.
Not only are there limitless arrays of options to choose from, 3D printing is pretty great for the budget conscious consumer. For example, a custom wood table would cost thousands of dollars, but a printed table would cost just a few hundred. Plus, it’s much quicker to get the finished product!
Another benefit to 3D printing is that it’s much more environmentally friendly and sustainable than most traditional means of creating furniture. Virtually no waste is created with a 3D printed piece of furniture, and most pieces can even be recycled themselves!
While this technique won’t replace traditonal means of creating furniture or have much affect on upholstery, we’re so excited to see this dynamic process grow in the future! What do you think, would you put one of these pieces in your home?
